Sculptural hammered copper jar with lid // Hammer-raised round jar // Angle-raised copper vessel // Globe Urn

$220.00

  • Details
Nearly spherical, this jar was hammer-raised by hand using ancient metalsmithing techniques. Made entirely by me in my Connecticut studio. The process begins with a flat sheet of copper. I hold the flat metal at an angle against a specialized anvil or raising stake and hammer it in concentric circles, stretching it gradually upward and inward. After each round of hammering, the metal is annealed and cleaned. This vessel required eleven rounds to achieve its final shape.

The jar itself has such a regular, rounded shape, I gave it a more freeform lid, the handle of which also serves as a stand for the piece.

I call this the Globe Urn for its shape and also for the original occasion of its making, the 2025 meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America.

The jar is about three inches across. With a tight-fitting rounded lid, it can be used as a pet urn or to store small precious objects.

Copper is the traditional gift for the seventh wedding anniversary.
